Smart Aleck

A comedian for the brainy set

MyqHighRes-1

tand-up comedian Myq Kaplan has performed everywhere from Letterman to Conan to Comedy Central. Kaplan is known for his verbal wizardry, and he’s got the degree to prove it. He earned his master’s in linguistics from Boston University before making it big as a finalist on Last Comic Standing. Even Kaplan’s first name is a bit of wordplay, “Myq” is pronounced “Mike” (he was born Michael Kaplan). In addition to being a comedian, Kaplan is also a vegan so his favorite spots around town have the added benefit of actually being good for you. Duffy

The Comedy Studio, where the dream my life has become was incubated. I can’t promise it will make your dreams come true, but you’ll see funny shows, and possibly get drunk. (There’s alcohol!) Also, there’s magic sometimes.

Grasshopper. Named after something from the Karate Kid, or possibly a drink, or neither. The food is delicious and one of the women who works there knows the menu by heart, never writes anything down, and never forgets anything. Try to trick her. I recommend the Vietnamese pizza.

Dick Doherty’s Beantown Comedy Vault, another of the first places that ever let me on its stage. It’s where I headline most often when I come back to town, but you can go even if I’m not there. Other people are good, too!

ImprovBoston. If it seems like all I do in Boston is eat and go to comedy shows, that’s probably pretty close to correct. I do standup here, but there’s also improv (like the name says) and sketch (like the name doesn’t say). Also, in spite of the name, it’s in Cambridge.

Fomu, a restaurant that serves vegan ice cream, also in the aforementioned vegan district of Allston. Things are made of coconut! And maybe other stuff! But if you don’t like the taste of coconut, don’t worry; it mostly tastes like other stuff! Delicious stuff!

The Esplanade. See? It’s not food, it’s not comedy, it’s just a place in Boston that I like. I love walking along the river, just for thinking. Probably thinking about comedy. Or eating. But what else is there?

The Harvard Bookstore. The used section is super. Go buy things there, or sell them, or both. (Just not the same books. Unless you want to. Which would be weird, but fine.)
