Comedy Central

A comedy club that’s owned and run by comics

H

arvard Square is better known for its intellectuals than for its comedians, yet there’s a comedy club that can make even the locals laugh. The Comedy Studio, created and operated by comedians, operates out of an intimate attic space above the Hong Kong restaurant, averaging 10 comics a night plus the Boston area’s only regularly scheduled magic show and an occasional drop-in or surprise celebrity guest. Network scouts are among those who stop by to sift for talent. There’s table service with a full food and drink menu. Seating is up-close and personal—as is much of the material. You’ll want to leave the kids at home for this one. Rineman

The first comedy in America was a play called The Contrast written by a Bostonian named Royall Tyler and the beginning of a legacy of Boston comedy that has continued through Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Denis Leary, Steven Wright, Lenny Clarke, Jimmy Tingle, the Harvard Lampoon, most of the writers of The Simpsons, and a huge proportion of the cast of Saturday Night Live.
