A
bolitionist and poet John Greenleaf Whittier spent most of his adult life here in a house he bought in 1836, which has been impeccably preserved; even most of the paint and wallpaper is original. When Whittier’s poetry didn’t pay, he supported himself as a teacher and shoemaker until he was befriended by abolitionist editor William Lloyd Garrison, who was the first to publish his work. Whittier later became editor himself of the Pennsylvania Freeman, a leading antislavery newspaper. While he lived here, Whittier helped found the Liberty Party, in 1839 which went on to evolve into the Republican Party. He is buried in Amesbury’s Union Cemetery.
Whittier, California, where Richard Nixon was raised and went to high school and to Whittier College, is named for John Greenleaf Whittier.
