ommonwealth Books has two locations, but our favorite is the one hidden away in, of all places, the basement of the Old South Meeting House in Downtown Crossing. It has out-of-date textbooks that make fascinating reading (one about astronomy, for instance, from before man landed on the moon) and sweet secondhand children’s books with notes written inside. But the hidden gem in this store is the selection of college yearbooks from the 1950s. The Simmons College yearbook quotes are the best. “A coquette to the ends of her fingers.” Or, “Neat as a pin.” And the hair? Classic. Horton
As punishment for its role in fomenting the rebellion, the Old South Meeting House was occupied by British soldiers at the outset of the Revolutionary War, who burned the pews for firewood and used the building as a bar and stable. It took eight years to restore.
