T
o this day, no one knows who secretly put a finely crafted, 600-pound red granite bench dedicated to the writer Virginia Woolf in a quiet waterside stand of pines at Fresh Pond Reservation in 1994, inscribed with a passage from the 1928 novel Orlando: “There are wild birds’ feathers – the owls, the nightjars. I shall dream wild dreams. I should lie at peace here with only the sky above.” After the mystery received worldwide attention, however, the city let it stay.
Virginia Woolf suffered from what was likely bipolar disorder and committed cuitice by drowning herself when she was 59.
