o this day, no one knows who secretly put a finely crafted, 600-pound red granite bench dedicated to the writer Virginia Woolf in a quiet waterside stand of pines at Fresh Pond Reservation in 1994, inscribed with a passage from the 1928 novel Orlando: “There are wild birds’ feathers – the owls, the nightjars. I shall dream wild dreams. I should lie at peace here with only the sky above.” After the mystery received worldwide attention, however, the city let it stay.
