T
he CharlieCard goes a lot farther than a ride on the T. Although it isn’t particularly well promoted, there’s a program under which you can use the T pass at dozens of restaurants, museums, and attractions for deep discounts. Sail away on a Boston Harbor Cruises cruise. Appetizers at popular restaurants taste a lot better when they’re free. Looking for an excuse to start working out? Gyms all over the city have hopped on the train with savings on memberships and more. Jacobson
The name for the CharlieCard was taken from a folk song later adopted by the Kingston Trio about a rider named Charlie unable to pay a controversial five-cent exit fare imposed in 1948, and therefore mythically trapped forever on the T.
