And here’s the part you didn’t know: The friends of a Lieutenant Robert Massie, who was shot dead in a duel over a card game in 1817, sealed his killer alive in a wall at Fort Independence with bricks and mortar, leaving him to die. A sullen private named Edgar Allan Poe, posted to Fort Independence 10 years later, heard about the incident and used it as the basis for his story, “The Cask of Amontillado.” Marcus
