unch of Grapes may be a secret to you, but it wasn’t to author William Styron. He has been among the many literary luminaries who summered on the Vineyard and snuck in when they thought the tourists weren’t gawking. Styron called it the best bookstore in America. And it’s true that while this place may be on an island, its offerings are exhaustive and up to date, its sales staff is out of central casting (might you keep the noise down, please?), and there are Friday night readings upstairs by authors, resident and visitor. Find a great book here to bring to the beach, curl up with by the fire in the off season, or take along on the ferry.
Among the authors who live or lived on Martha’s Vineyard: David McCullough, William Styron, Shel Silverstein, Judy Blume, John Hersey, Dorothy West, Lillian Hellman, and Geraldine Brooks
