R
od Dee is easy to miss, but worth finding, for great, cheap Thai food. The restaurant (there are also locations in Washington Square and the Fenway, and the original is in Porter Square) has a few tables, an easy-to-navigate menu over the counter, and brightly colored photos of the food hanging on the walls, interspersed with pictures of Thai monks and other slapdash décor. The line snakes to the door around the dinner rush, so one secret is to call ahead. Another: the pad Paradise, shrimp and chicken with snow peas, string beans, and cashews in a hot and spicy sauce, a favorite of in-the-know regulars. The pad Thai with chicken and fresh scallions is worth any kind of a wait (and overcomes the not particularly warm service and cash-only policy), and Rod Dee’s sweet Thai iced tea a great way to cap off any meal.
