hen you first walk into the dark, tight room, you’ll think to yourself, “Really?” But ignore those first impressions of Santarpio’s, sit down, and order a pizza. After the first bite, you’ll get it. A gooey combination of cheese and sauce atop a crunchy thin crust, cooked on a grill, attracts those (we saw Rudy Giuliani here, and he knows his pizza) who get that the best pizza in town is not necessarily in the North End, but here in this nondescript dive in the shadow of the elevated Route 1A—a real guy’s-guy place, complete with a hefty beer selection and pictures of famous boxers lining the walls. Frank Santarpio opened Santarpio’s as a bakery in 1903, and didn’t start serving pizza until 1933. To this day, there are only two other items on the menu: grilled lamb and grilled sausage. But trust us: Get the pizza.
