H
idden in a strip mall, next to a fitness club (ironically), the Blue Moon Bagel Café is a closely kept secret jealously guarded by the suburbanites who’ve stumbled across it. Run by a fourth-generation baker whose family ran the wildly popular Freedman’s of Boston bakery in Quincy Market, Blue Moon sells baked goods made the old-fashioned way, in ridiculously huge, hard-to-finish portions, starting with 27 kinds of bagels including chocolate chip and Asiago cheese. It also offers sandwiches, salads, and soups, but it’s the baked goods, including artisan breads, that make it worth the trip. Oh, yeah, and the free samples on the counter …
Freedman’s of Boston bakery in Quincy Market was at one time the highest-grossing retail outlet, per square foot, of any kind in the United States.
