T
he gritty fishing village of Menemsha is off the tourist track but worth finding, if only for the easy-to-miss gray-shingled shack that makes some of Martha’s Vineyard’s best clam chowder. The Bite is run by two sisters and a brother using their grandmother’s recipes for standout whole-belly fried clams, oysters, squid, shrimp, and scallops, and fish and chips using local flounder delivered daily from the nearby docks. Another secret: the great skin-on shoestring fries. Get there early to claim one of the two picnic tables. Better yet, take your catch to the breakwater or the beach, where you’ll see epic sunsets.
Thanks mainly to summer visitors, called “washashores,” Chilmark has the highest average property values in Massachusetts. Its other claim to fame? It’s the birthplace of the character Fox Mulder in The X-Files.
