Super Bowl

Champion chowder at a South Boston haunt

T

he chowder at Amrheins is so good, you can’t just have a cup. You have to have a bowl. Creamy but not too thick, and made with the freshest clams, Amrheins’ version stands apart from other New England chowdah mainly because of the spongy fried-clam fritters that come plopped down in the middle of it. Better than any old (and stale) salted cracker, the fritters absorb the flavor without getting all soggy. The locals know that there’s also an all-you-can eat Sunday brunch buffet and—a big plus in Southie—free off-street parking. Cassis

Amrheins regular Tom McIntyre so liked the restaurant’s owner, Joe Mulrey, that he named his son after him. Joey McIntyre went on to pop fame in the New Kids on the Block.
