A lunch bargain so big you'll still be eating it for dinner

web_3986

T

he meatball sub at Al’s South Street Café, hidden a few blocks from South Station, is the best lunch bargain in town. Well, in two towns, considering that Al also offers it at his locations on State Street and in Harvard Square. It’s about a foot long, on fresh-baked French bread for just a few bucks, and so big you can take half of it home and heat it up for dinner. And it’s served by fast-working counter staff who remember your name and your usual order, and always have the time to ask you how your day is going. In-the-know regulars flock to this little hole in the wall, with wooden stools and tables and the menu hanging above the counter, every day for lunch (the State Street location also serves some of the biggest breakfasts you’ve ever seen), and many remember to buy a fresh loaf of the outrageously good bread to take home and share with their real families.
