A quiet, cerebral oasis in the heart of Copley Square

Photo: Boston Public Library

n the heart of Copley Square is an oasis as quiet as, well, a library. It’s the surprisingly good café, called the Courtyard, off the Italianate courtyard of the Boston Public Library’s historic McKim Building, and it serves up everything from pastries to afternoon tea (on Wednesdays through Fridays) to three-course meals including simple salads to hanger steaks. Get your lunch to go and enjoy it in the courtyard, with nothing noisier than the splashing of the fountain to disturb you. Roh

The Boston Public Library was the first publicly supported municipal library in the United States, and remains among the largest.
