ape Cod is at its heart a throwback to simpler vacations, a place where you can still find drive-in movie theaters, old-fashioned clam shops and dairy bars, pie shops, bandstand concerts—and beachside rental cottages without TV or air conditioning. That would be the hidden-away Surf Side Colony Cottages, on the ocean-facing Wellfleet-Eastham line, a collection of 22 retro, ’60s-style rental houses just off residents-only LeCount Hollow Beach (to which the renters have full access). There’s a one-week minimum, but it’s a cheap place to stay by Cape Cod standards, with full kitchens and barbecue grills. Oh, yeah, and, seriously, no TVs. But Wellfleet does still have a drive-in movie theater.
The clock on the First Congregational Church at 200 Main St. in Wellfleet is the only town clock in the world that strikes the time in ship’s bells. The day is divided into six four-hour “watches” beginning with first watch at noon, and bells are chimed each half hour: one at 12:30, two at 1, three at 1:30, up to eight at 4, when the cycle repeats.\
