he back room of Salmagundi is filled to the brim, so to speak, with hats of all shapes and sizes—almost 7,000, to be exact. This little-noticed hat and accessory store quietly sells around 500 hats a week to the in-the-know, including stylish celebs, looking to spice up their wardrobes with a masculine suede ivy cap or a Kentucky Derby hat fit for Kate Middleton. There are straw hats, snakeskin hats, cowboy hats, and winter caps. And here’s another secret: Fewer than half of the store’s hats are on display. Don’t see the perfect fedora? The Salmagundi hatters will happily bring you more options from their secret storeroom. And yet another secret: You can swap ribbons or change your hat’s shape for free. Modica
