he Garment District is a department store, but it’s certainly no Macy’s. This is an alternative department store, featuring three different retail experiences: a huge vintage store with more than 40,000 items, a year-round costume shop called Boston Costume with rentals, and By the Pound, where customers can rummage through bales of clothing, shoes, belts, and accessories delivered daily fill their own bags, and pay around $1.50 a pound on their way out. You can also sell to the Garment District, which will pay you 30 percent of the resale value, in cash, or give you a store credit for 60 percent. That’s an experience you’ll never get at Saks. The building that houses the Garment District was originally a soap factory.
