s the clock struck 8 p.m., a wave of smartly outfitted women—fashion bloggers on a mission—descended onto the main floor of Arts at the Armory in Somerville. There was a feeling of frenzy in the air. From the other end of the room, a capacity crowd burst through a set of double doors, swarming like bees. There had been a line all the way down the block. The camera crew from ABC's Nightline gamely maneuvered through the crush, perhaps in search of hair pulling, or maybe just a good sound bite. So much for this one remaining a secret.

Twenty minutes and 20-plus racks of clothing later, the offerings had been fully pillaged. The stage lay strewn with distressed denim. Leftover wire hangers dangled haphazardly. A table that had once been piled high with jewelry and accessories was completely bare. Swappers wandered around in a daze. I found my way over to Second Glass and 90+ Cellars, where I hoped for wine and relaxation.

My performance had been disappointing. So mesmerized was I by the crowd that I'd let my guard down and not swapped as fiercely as I was expecting to. At one point a sequin skirt was just within reach, but expertly snatched from my sight by someone who clearly never intended to wear it, but had to have it anyway. "Listen lady, I have a styling challenge on my hands!" I wanted to shout. But I wasn't about to quarrel with granny over a mini skirt.

In one of Fashion Week's more unusual events, Amy and Melissa (the Swapaholics) had challenged Boston's fashion bloggers to create swap outfits we would model on the runway. After looking over my loot, which included a cream fringe dress, draped gold top, and burnt velvet tent dress, I decided to go with an '80s glam-rock theme, based on a pair of tie-dyed jeans. I added a studded vest and heavy gold jewelry. Voila! Isabel Marant with edge. It was very cool to see the looks each blogger invented. In the end, I made it down the runway and didn't fall or get into a fistfight. Another awesome event from the Swapaholicsand Boston Fashion Week 2010.
