Shaving Face

Where guys can still get an old-school shave

here’s still a place where guys can escape to the sanctity of such throwbacks as a straight-razor shave, darts, and a newspaper. The awesomely old-school Erik’s Barber Shop, complete with authentic barber pole, isn’t just like something out of the ’30s. Its chairs, hot-lather machines and other equipment do date back the ’30s, a time when gentlemen wore hats and took them off for ladies and the National Anthem. But you gotta try the timeless classic of the straight-razor shave, available these days almost nowhere else, and accompanied by a hot towel and after shave. Some guys drive an hour for this. Your face will feel like a baby’s bottom, as you envision Edward G. Robinson getting a straight-razor shave from a nervous lackey while pissing off Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in Key Largo. Sorry, girls: It’s men only. Jacobson

The straight-razor shave was pretty much killed off by the safety razor, invented in Boston in 1901 by King Camp Gillette, a utopian socialist who believed that all industry should be run by a single public corporation.
