T
he oldest child of one-term congressman and two-term Boston Mayor John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald and Mary Josephine Hannon, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy—matriarch of the Kennedy political dynasty—was born on July 22, 1890 in the nondescript house at 4 Garden Court near the intersection with Prince Street in the North End. The house is now privately owned.
The Fitzgeralds moved from the North End to Dorchester when Rose was a child. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied piano, but “Honey Fitz” refused to let her go to Wellesley College.
