Safe Harbor

A hotel by the harbor that's a little-known deal

n the middle of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace/Quincy Market neighborhood and right next to the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the great deal that is the Harborside Inn seems to be known only to the operators of fall foliage tours. The owners, who also run the Charlesmark in the Back Bay, have modernized the place to make it seem boutique-y, with teak platform beds and hardwood floors to complement the exposed brick walls; the 1854 granite landmark building also has an eight-story skylit atrium at the base, with a gracious lobby at the base, a lounge and bar with outdoor patio, and a coffee shop—all for about half of what neighboring hotels charge. Among the other advantages of this location, there’s a station right in front that serves the Blue Line subway from the airport, just two stops away.

Colonial Boston’s main street, which ran from the harbor to the Old State House, was originally called King Street. It was renamed State Street as a jibe at the monarchy during the Revolutionary War.
