he robe and desk of the first Jewish member of the U.S. Supreme Court are on display at Brandeis University, itself named in honor of Justice Louis D. Brandeis. Brandeis was appointed to the high court in 1916 by Woodrow Wilson. The university also has Brandeis’s books and furniture from his home, and unrelated artifacts including the death masks of the anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti, and a permanent exhibit of 19th and 20th century Jewish ceremonial items such as spice boxes, scrolls and a sabbath table.

Brandeis University was originally supposed to be named after Albert Einstein, but Einstein withdrew his support in a clash with the university’s founders. He later declined an honorary degree.
