ou may have been texting on your cell when you walked past the site of one of the most important inventions of all time: the invention of the telephone. There’s a plaque commemorating Alexander Graham Bell’s first successful transmission of sound on June 2, 1875. (The sound was the twang of a clock spring; it was not until almost a year later that Bell shouted, “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you” on his telephone.) Bell’s lab was on the fifth floor of what was then 109 Court St.
When Alexander Graham Bell died on August 2, 1922, all the telephones in America were stilled for a minute in his honor.
