ikes not bombs is a pretty good idea, not just philosophically but because it’s a full-service bike shop that sells refurbished bikes, accessories, locks, and bike parts; employs local teens who have gone through bicycle-repair training programs; and donates nearly 5,000 bikes a year to people in such places as Guatemala, Tanzania, and Ghana. Volunteers make this shop go ’round by helping to fix up the more than 6,000 bicycles and bike parts donated every year to be fixed up for sale or to be sent to people who need them abroad, not just for exercise, but for basic and essential transportation. The number of bike shops in America has been declining steadily for the last 10 years, from 5,505 to 4,178.
