kay, Brighton Center may not be in the running for best live music neighborhood, but that just makes Devlin’s an even better secret. Every Thursday night at 9:30, the bar and bistro hosts Hub Dub, a reggae band made up of some of the top young players in town. The show is free and the bar stays crowded until closing time. The band plays mostly covers, but not the kind that have you longing for the original. It’s much more expression than imitation. Sure, you’ll recognize some Bob Marley, but you’re more likely to hear spirited versions of Pink Floyd or Radiohead. Macomber

Boston’s long association with the Caribbean may or may not be immortalized in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood, which some historians believe was named for the 18th- and 19th-century rum trade. In fact, it’s more likely that the area was named for a native American chief whose name sounded roughly like “Jamaica.”
