A neighborhood bar with great neighborhood music

nion Square has long been a popular refuge for local musicians, even some famous ones. Bull McCabe’s (formerly Tir Na nOg) is one of the more popular hangs. There’s rarely a cover (now $5 on Thursdays and Sundays), and the talent is always top notch. On Tuesdays, grit-wrangled delta-soul singer David Johnston commands the stage in a weekly show that's one of the best-kept secrets on the far side of the river. Musicians from all over town come by to pay their respects. Bull’s also offers two of the finest dub/reggae nights. On Thursdays, the legendary Dub Down always reaches a rowdy pre-weekend climax. Then the band that closes out the weekend (or starts the new week, depending on how you look at it) is as all star as all star gets around here. Dub Apocalypse, as it’s called, is a coming-together of the best jazz, reggae, and rock talent from the past two decades of local (mostly Berklee-bred) music. Anchored by the rhythm section of John Brown’s Body and guitarist Johnny Trama of Nate Wilson Group, rotating players include members of Morphine, Fully Celebrated Orchestra, and G. Shhhh! Johnston wrote “I Don’t Wanna Know,” a song Peter Wolf recorded for his 2010 album Midnight Souvenirs that was a hit single on classic-rock radio. Wolf drops by Bull’s every so often.
