Dining, digitally, near MIT

ou might not think that “digital” and “dinner” mix, unless you’re talking about finding a restaurant on your smartphone app. But Firebrand Saints (the name comes from the character Firebrand, a bad boy with good ideas) picks up on the spirit of his high-tech ‘hood with digital art by internationally renowned artists. On one wall, a projection of light sketches and erases houses and neighborhoods from Google Street View. Monitors above the bar interpret TV scene in colors, words, and images. And, oh, yeah, the food: It’s high-end gourmet sandwiches and burgers made of everything from mushrooms, haddock, veal, and steak tartare that are almost as trippy as the decor. The ingredients are all sustainably produced; try the classic French rotisserie with a Boylan’s soda on a chair made of recycled Coke bottles at a tabletop that’s a recycled truck hood. Kendall Square is named for the sprawling Kendall Boiler and Tank Company, which once operated here. It, in turn, was named after Edward Kendall, who cofounded the company in 1860. Kendall Boiler and Tank is still in business, though it’s moved to Chelmsford.
