Big Style

Funk and soul join reggae for one hell of a party

Buru Style

B

uru Style is a big band with a lot of moving parts. But the diverse group crosses genres with ease, mostly splitting time between classic soul and reggae. The band has enough muscle to keep the party going with its instrumentals, thanks to the always-charging horn section and rowdy junkyard beats (the horn section alone carries the same weight as any vocal melody). But Buru Style can linger in the background just as easily, which is why some of the finer local singers have joined the 10-piece band onstage and in the studio. Right now the band backs former Soulive vocalist Toussaint the Liberator, a big voice around these parts. Wallace

Shhhh! The Crab, Buru Style’s first instrumental
album was recorded in studio live in front of an audience. You can hear the crowd chanting along.
Shhhh! Buru Style has backed Dion Knibb,
Ras Coley, Lady Lee, Shasha Marley (of Ghana),
and Haitian/Bostonian Ajani.
