O
n Cape Cod, having a picnic isn’t just a great way to appreciate the beach or other scenic places. It’s an alternative to the pricey restaurants and snotty service. And the Brown Jug, a few blocks off Route 6A in the tiny Sandwich downtown business district (all of it a secret worth discovering), will pack the perfect picnic for you, with sandwiches, antipasti, and fixings including gourmet meats, cheeses, nuts, chocolates, crackers, honey, mustards, jams, jellies, olives, and desserts. The adjacent wine shop focuses on Italian vinos, pinots, and craft beers. You may end up skipping the beach altogether in favor of people-watching from the bistro-style corner patio, where jazz plays in the afternoons.
The word “picnic” was first used in 17th-century France to describe the practice of bringing wine to dinner in a restaurant.
