O
n the fringes of Nantucket Town, Brotherhood of Thieves is a peaceful, out-of-the-way respite and a friendly place for lunch that’s often overlooked by visitors. Which makes it especially popular with locals. But that’s the brotherhood-y part: The 1840s whaling bar is one of those rare places where Nantucketers and tourists mix easily, even at the season’s height. The native quahog clam chowder is notably good, as are the standout char-broiled burgers, famous curly fries, and local Whale’s Tale Pale Ale on tap alongside other craft beers and maritime-inspired cocktails (the Dark and Stormy, for example, made of Gosling’s Black Seal Rum and Barritt’s ginger beer). The cozy, low-ceilinged room is all exposed brick and dark wood, tucked in the basement of a Federal-style house. Forgo the tables for a seat at the bar and strike up a conversation with a stranger.
Brotherhood of Thieves is named for the title of a pamphlet written by Nantucket abolitionist Stephen Foster in 1844, disparaging those who continued to band together to support slavery.
