Lunch Rush

Great tastes only the locals know

ecrets are a part of Blunch’s repertoire of things that will help you start the day right. This tiny South End neighborhood café serves only breakfast and lunch (get it?), largely to the army of employees at the nearby Boston Medical Center. Well, now that secret’s out. And here’s another one: You can earn a complimentary coffee if you look in the right places. Find the electric utility boxes painted by local artist Christos Hamawi for a free cappuccino to accompany the hearty breakfast or lunch sandwiches à la carte, including eggwiches and bagelwiches served all days and oversized pressed paninis on bread baked fresh on site. There are also fresh-baked muffins, individual-sized quiches, and salads. With only a few counter seats, and plastic plates and forks, this place is best for takeout. But don’t leave without one of the gloriously gooey chocolate-chip cookies. Araki

The massive red-brick building at 11 East Newton St. served as the exterior of the fictional St. Eligius Hospital in the television series St. Elsewhere, based on Boston City Hospital—now the Boston Medical Center. Built in 1868 as the St. James Hotel (guests included President Grover Cleveland), it was later home to the New England Conservatory of Music and is now elderly housing.
