T
he surprisingly sophisticated northern Italian fare at Bistro 5 makes it worth the drive to West Medford for even urbanites in search of distinctive, memorable meals. Small but stylish, it’s one of those true hidden gems, with food made of seasonal ingredients on a menu that changes daily (try the sweet-potato gnocchi if it’s offered when you’re there) and frequent special events. The personal attention is such that chef Vittorio Ettore (he’s half Italian, half Venezuelan) is likely to visit your table and make suggestions, or you can arrange to enjoy the prix-fixe three- or five-course chef’s tasting menus with such specialties as escargot and rabbit (yeah, we know—in West Medford!) accompanied by selections from the very long wine list.
