- CAPE COD
- MARTHA’S VINEYARD
anna stay in a lighthouse? The Bass River Light in West Dennis, deactivated when shipping on the Bass River declined after the Cape Cod Canal opened, is now a hotel called the Lighthouse Inn, with ocean views and working fireplaces—and the only privately maintained working lighthouse beacon in the country. Three of the guestrooms are in the original lighthouse keeper’s house.
One other active Cape Cod lighthouse invites overnight stays: Race Point Light in Provincetown. The 1816 lighthouse is two and a half miles across sand dunes from the nearest road—so distant that a Race Point lighthousekeeper is credited with being the inventor of the dune buggy. A volunteer will drive you to the four-room keeper’s house, where you can stay overnight.
