nitting isn’t just for spinsters. It’s become a social occasion for people of all ages. Stitch House, a yarn and crochet store, has several clubs devoted to different techniques of knitting—the Friday Sweater Club, Sunday Sock Club, Friday Quick Sew—in which knitting devotees can hang out with and learn from one another. It’s free, although a reservation is required. Not ready to join a club? Take a class first. Stitch House offers classes ranging from introductory sewing to patchwork quilting. The percentage of women aged 25 to 34 who knit has grown from 13 percent in 2002 to 33 percent today, according to the Craft Yarn Council of America. The council doesn’t keep track of the number of men who knit, which is also on the rise.
