T
his restored 1770 whaling captain’s house in the middle of Nantucket Town hides a surprisingly stylish secret behind its undistinguished gray-shingled exterior. On the inside, it’s all about style: designer furniture, Frette linens, Matouk duvets, bath products by Fresh, wood-burning fireplaces. That’s because owners Ken and Deborah Withrow were previously general manager of the Royalton in New York City and a display manager at Henri Bendel, respectively. And while there are only 12 rooms at their Union Street Inn, in-the-know visitors consider them the height of luxury and taste. Speaking of which, the included gourmet breakfasts are made to order, there are fresh-baked cookies served up every afternoon, and there’s a concierge who can get you a table in the busiest of restaurants in high season. So don’t judge a book by its cover.
The Wampanoag native-American name for Nantucket is “Canopache,” which means “place of peace.”
