The son of a sea captain, William Haynes became a silversmith who specialized in flutes. Today the William S. Haynes Company, opened in 1888, is the oldest continuously operating manufacturer of handmade flutes in the United States, whose flutes are used by musicians including Jean-Pierre Rampal and Kathy Chastain. The factory, at 12 Piedmont St., has free tours.
