O
ut of sight and largely out of mind, way down at the beginning of Commercial Street at the limit of developed space in Provincetown’s little-trafficked far West End, is one of the most unusual inns on Cape Cod, with some of the best views. The appropriately named Land’s End Inn, high on Gull Hill, is an assortment of architectures and interior designs impossible to describe, even by the owner, who finally settles on, “Eclectic.” So is the clientele, a mix of straight and gay and many of them regulars, who, though they prefer to keep this secret to themselves, quickly surrender themselves to lively and useful conversations with the interlopers over the (included) breakfast on the veranda overlooking the ocean.
An original 1862 station of the U.S. Life Saving Service, the Old Harbor Life Saving Station was moved from Chatham to Provincetown in 1977 and now is a museum with original rescue apparatus including a dory, a surfboat, a beach cart, breeches’ buoys and a gun that shot a rope to grounded vessels in a storm. It’s open daily in July and August, and beach rescue drills are re-enacted Thursday evenings in the summer.
