A retro restaurant that’s as friendly as they come

e’d say the people at the Knotty Pine are as friendly as family, but your family probably is not this friendly. The nearly century-old retro lunch and breakfast joint is a study in red vinyl and Formica in a whole neighborhood that seems a throwback, along a single quiet street you’d never notice unless you were looking for it. Diners actually talk to each other, regulars order “the usual,” and the motto here is, simply, “Cleanliness.” You almost expect the place to be in black and white. The prices seem out of the Leave It to Beaver era, too, yet the portions are large and the muffins, toast, and bagels are homemade. So are the terrific omelets, of course, and the three-decker clubs.

One of 13 villages of Newton, Auburndale was settled in 1678 and was famous for its riverside zoo, Norumbega Park, and ballroom, the Totem Pole, which closed in 1964.
