o good is Friendly Toast that some savvy Bostonians used to travel all the way to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to eat brunch there. Then the cult favorite quietly opened a Cambridge outpost. The new place captures the look, feel and ambience of the original, while keeping its eclectic and daring menu: mammoth pancakes made from homemade batter with add-ins including M&Ms and flavors including pumpkin, and inventive egg dishes like smoked salmon Benedict and “green eggs and ham”—two eggs poached and served under an herb sauce and over Virginia ham—all delivered in a kitschy atmosphere with cartoon-covered menus, doo-wop jukebox music, and vintage ads for Kool-Aid hanging on the walls. Friendly Toast serves lunch and dinner, too. You gotta try the Orleans sweet-potato fries, covered in brown sugar with Tabasco and sour cream dipping sauce.
