amed for the pseudonym of the Irish author and playwright, Brian O’Nolan, Flann O’Brien’s is just as reserved as its namesake. But it’s worth finding. This humble, rustic Irish bar boasts some of the best food and beer specials around. Religiously cleaning its lines every two weeks, Flann’s guarantees the beer will be fresh and the pour of each Guinness will be perfect. In addition to daily food specials for about five bucks, there’s a weekday burger special and a beer bucket special featuring a different bottled beer each month. The pub also has a raffle each month, football (the Irish kind) on the telly, and hurling and rugby, with no cover (as some other bars charge). Another secret: Get two-for-one appetizers weekdays between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Oh, and there’s brunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 9 a.m. Minton

Brian O’Nolan, whose pseudonyms were both Flann O’Brien and Myles na gCopaleen, wrote At Swim-Two-Birds andThe Third Policeman, known for their bizarre humor and widely compared to the work of James Joyce. It was a comparison O’Nolan didn’t like. “I declare to God if I hear that name Joyce one more time,” he once said, “I will surely froth at the gob.”
