any of the countless antiques consignment shops on Cape Cod look like someone’s garage or basement, filled with junk by hopeful sellers. The little-noticed and subtly named Sandwich Antiques Center offers cool stuff you might actually want to buy in bright and clean displays with classical music and knowledgeable salespeople. Sellers from all over the country consign their merchandise here in the specialty categories of nautical and military collectibles, medical and scientific instruments, and especially glass in this town that’s long been known for American glass: china, Royal Doulton, Hummel, Moser, blown, cut, crystal, delft, European and Chinese porcelain, and Sandwich glass.

Sandwich became a glass-making center in the 19th century not because of the availability of Cape Cod beach sand, which the local glass works didn’t actually use. Its attraction was a shallow harbor and plentiful timber for the furnaces.
