oston’s own New Balance has a factory store near its corporate headquarters in Boston, with rows of those signature red boxes bursting with bargain-priced seconds, closeouts, and discontinued shoes. There’s also active wear for runners, yogis, hikers, and gym-goers, plus other New Balance brands including Aravon, Dunham, and PF Fliers, plus a dedicated space for its lacrosse and hockey Warrior brand. But, no, that’s not the secret. The secret is that the prices go even lower at the unadvertised summer tent sale (not actually in a tent, but indoors, thankfully) and the marathon-month sale every April, which is only known by word of mouth. The word “sneaker” has been around since at least 1887, when boys used it to describe how quiet the rubber soles made their tennis shoes. But please don’t call the shoes here “sneakers.” Call them “running shoes.”
