A sandwich that will transport you to New York

e’ll admit that New York City delis make a sandwich that’s a rare and special treat. But never try to tell us Boston doesn’t do things just as well as NYC. Michael’s Deli may be off the beaten track near Coolidge Corner, but it will make you feel like you’ve been transported to Manhattan. The turkey and brisket selections will be the best and biggest that you’ve ever had, but it’s the corned beef—pickled in New York and cooked fresh here daily—that’s the real secret. Another? Try a bagel, lightly toasted, with salmon cream cheese. And if you find yourself asking, “Where’s the cream cheese in all this salmon?”—don’t say you weren’t warned. Tebsherany

The Irish didn’t bring corned beef with them when they immigrated to the United States. They began to eat it when they got here, often buying it from Jewish merchants, who cured beef to make it kosher.
