Tomatoes were not introduced to Europe until returning Spanish ad Portuguese explorers returned with them from the New World in the 16th century. The inventor of the pizza was Raffaele Esposito, who put mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, and basil on a flatbread crust in 1889 to honor Queen Margherita of Italy.
