Male Call

A southern-style, manly sports bar in the 'burbs

T

he Biltmore Bar & Grille is a great, manly sports bar, where you least expect to find it (if you can find it at all): hidden away in a suburban neighborhood, where a cast of friendly regulars enjoys New England microbrews and inspired southern food in a classic setting, with pressed-tin ceilings, mahogany paneling, and retro decor. The best part is, it’s all real, from the Tennessee native chef and owner to the atmosphere of this old-fashioned (but newly updated) dive, which opened in 1921 and survived Prohibition as a speakeasy. Manly, yes, but the Biltmore welcomes families, too, so you can eat with your family, then grab a beer and watch the game with your buds. It even serves a fluffernutter—peanut butter and marshmallow fluff with bananas and raspberry sauce. Like all the food, it’s a clever twist on the original. Try the mustard catfish or the nicely priced and heavily spiced bar menu, which comes with a Hoodsie chaser to calm your taste buds. There’s also a brunch on Sundays and holiday Mondays that includes the southern staple of waffles with wings. Nesin

Hemlock Gorge in Newton Upper Falls is the sharpest drop in the entire 79-mile length of the Charles River—26 feet—causing the falls for which the neighborhood is named.
