Conscientious Coffee
A café that sells only fairly traded organic coffee
T
otally out of character with the sports bars and lunch dives around it, the Equal Exchange Café serves caffeine with a side of conscience, specializing in organically grown, fairly traded, locally roasted coffee. The décor is a reflection of this environmental and social experiment, with high ceilings, counters and stools made from wood recycled or salvaged from other restaurants, and a glazed cement floor. In addition to 40 varieties of organic coffees from Latin America, Africa, and Asia, you’ll find breakfast and lunch served, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. There are even instructions about what to throw away and what can be composted to eliminate waste. Arpie

Shhh who knew
Coffee is surpassed only by oil as the world’s most traded commodity, but there are so many middlemen that the average Third-World coffee farmer gets as little as 25 cents for a pound that retails for up to $40.
