B
oston restaurants boast about their “best-in-the-city” clam chowder, but you won’t find much better than the chowder at the Warren Tavern. Claiming bragging rights as the oldest tavern in Massachusetts, the little corner pub serves up creamy chowder that comes piping hot, with the traditional oyster crackers, in either a bowl or a cup the size of a tall coffee mug. It’s not too salty and the broth’s thicker than most, made thicker still by the generous helpings of potatoes, celery, and hunks of clam. Stefano
The Warren Tavern is named for General Joseph Warren, who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Warren’s body was identified by a false tooth in what may be the first case of forensic odontology.
