or a flat route with great views, run the Esplanade along both sides of the Charles River. You can do any number of loops of varying distances across the river bridges as the atmosphere changes from cityscape to greenery. From the Charles/MGH Red Line stop, run across the Longfellow Bridge, bearing left along the river. The halfway mark is the Boston University Bridge, which begins a new view of the Esplanade and Cambridge. Another secret: The paths are cleared of snow in the winter, making them the best place in the city for a slush- and traffic-free run. Canal
The 2008 U.S. Olympic women’s marathon trials were held on a course parallel to the Esplanade, and 98 of the 146 women who ran it posted times under 2:50, the second-largest number ever.
